Services for Adoptees from the Guatemalan Government

The Guatemalan Ministry of Foreign Affairs provides two services for Guatemalan adoptees. The first is a free birth family search through the National Council of Adoptions and the second is access to our online records at RENAP.

Our organization successfully lobbied the Guatemalan government to get these services. We made a formal request to President Giammattei in Guatemala City in January 2021 and we received Presidential approval on the request. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs completed the work and the services went live in May 2021.

The birth family search is provided free of charge and adoptees can fill-out a form and submit it to the closest Guatemalan Consulate or Embassy or fill out the form in person with the assistance of the consulate staff. The National Council of Adoptions carries out the search and will arrange the reunion and provide a social worker to assist in preparing for the reunion.

The online access to documents is facilitated through RENAP. RENAP can generate a new CUI (Identification Number) upon request. The CUI number can be used to create an online account at RENAP so that adoptees can access their birth certificates. RENAP is also able to assist with obtaining DPIs and Passports. The service to generate a CUI is free of charge but the DPIs and passports  cost the normal fees that are charged to all Guatemalan citizens.
